A Legacy of Innovation in the Pursuit of Quiet

Soundtrap’s story begins with Roger Foulds, whose passion for engineering and problem-solving laid the foundation for what would become a leader in residential acoustic solutions.

Roger’s career started in England at Ford Motor Company, where he rose to become one of their top ten engineers. In the late 1970s, Roger and his wife Barbara Foulds immigrated to Canada, where he continued his career with General Motors Canada. It was in the automotive industry—where precision and noise control are essential—that Roger developed the expertise that would shape his future work.

By the late 1980s, Roger recognized that the same principles used to make vehicles quieter and more efficient could be applied to industrial and commercial noise challenges. But everything changed in the early 1990s when a local builder asked Roger for help solving a post-construction noise problem in a luxury home.

After Roger applied his knowledge, the results were remarkable. The homeowner could no longer hear the phone ringing in his office—or his own colorful language during business calls—much to his wife’s delight. In fact, she joked that she wouldn’t pay the builder unless the noise disappeared. Thanks to Roger’s intervention, the builder got paid, and the idea for a new business took root.

Word spread quickly. An architect, impressed by Roger’s work, invited him to help on a home for a high-profile client. That collaboration eventually caught the attention of the National Research Council of Canada, who worked with Roger on formal research into residential acoustics. His innovative work earned the Innovative New Products and Technology Award at Construct Canada in 1995—cementing the idea that premium homes deserved premium sound control.

And so, Soundtrap was born.

Roger’s son, Nick Foulds, grew up helping his father and naturally developed a passion for the work. After university, Nick joined the business, carrying forward the same dedication to craftsmanship, innovation, and the pursuit of serene living.

Today, Soundtrap is a recognized leader in luxury residential acoustics, helping homeowners, builders, and architects create extraordinary living spaces where peace, privacy, and comfort take centre stage.
